+ I was especially happy when Hotelier Magazine art director Courtney Jenkins reached out about the June issue - devoted to six strong women leaders moving the needle on gender equality in the hotel industry.
So many awesome things about the feature article and approach, where to start? First, a magazine focussing on strong women. Super. Despite changes in gender equality in the work place, I still mostly photograph white men. The numbers don't lie. Within finance, I've worked with small to medium sized firms that are almost exclusively male. Literally, I photograph twenty-five men and one woman over a full shoot day.
Next, the creative approach; bright, vibrant backgrounds. Sunny yellows, bright baby blues and rich emerald greens set off the colourful and dynamic personalities of our super models.
I was responsible for the magazine cover and three full page spreads as part of the larger feature. We worked with Gunjan Kahlon, director of Franchise Development, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts Inc., Heather McRory, Executive VP Operations, North and Central America, AccorHotels, and Reetu Gupta, Chief Operating Officer, Easton's Group and the Gupta Group.
Over a lengthy shoot day in Album's largest studio, we set up three oversized backgrounds, one for each executive. After pre-lighting for about four hours, we had a peppy lighting set-up that would make both the background and models pop. The studio was a refreshing (and well stocked) change from running around on location battling the elements. It's rare to get the opportunity to spend hours tweaking in the controlled and cool comfort of a top-knotch studio space. And of course, unlimited Diet Coke for me.
